Med+Pass sells colleges and universities a product that digitizes student immunization records, something co-founder, president and CFO Jim Wills says most clearly need.
"Most of these schools have a paper-based process," Wills said, describing a system where students turn in a paper form, which frequently needs to be returned when it's incomplete, and then that information is manually transferred into an existing electronic medical record program – all in all an extremely inefficient process, Wills argues. "We're basically taking that paper form and we're digitizing it and automating the process from start to finish," Wills said. Med+Pass' system include capabilities that can accept faxed paper forms from a student's home physician and insert that information into a digitized record and verify it, said Hallett Ogburn, one of the six co-founders and the company's CEO. It also has the ability to transfer that data to an existing electronic medical record or similar system, Ogburn said. Wills and Ogburn, both University of Alabama graduates, knew each other in college and initially had the idea to digitize medical records in some fashion. Once they settled on immunization records, the team, based here in Nashville, spent the past year building the platform before rolling out at Auburn University on Jan. 12. They're now in conversations with schools like Ohio State University, the University of Florida, Washington University and many others, which drives Wills' prediction of 25 schools by year's end. "Colleges are especially susceptible to disease outbreak,"Wills said, a risk Med+Pass argues its product can help mitigate. Especially at larger schools, Wills says, the inefficiency of a paper-based system can slow down the verification process, allowing unvaccinated students to slip through and put the school at risk for outbreaks of disease like meningitis and measles (a disease that is much in the news these days, following last month's Disneyland outbreak). To date, Med+Pass has raised a total of $410,00. The company initially raised $210,000, and is now nearly halfway through a $550,000 round (which would bring its total to $760,000).
