Colorado is also one of the most lenient states when it comes to opting out of those required immunizations. Parents can keep their kids in school without a vaccine for medical, religious or personal reasons. Colorado is one of 19 states with a personal exemption law. To keep kids in school because of a personal exemption parents only have to fill out a form one time. That exemption is good for the entire duration of their child's time at that particular school. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has proposed a rule that would make parents submit an exemption more regularly. For children in a licensed child care facility, non-medical immunization exemptions would have to be submitted every time the child is supposed to get a new shot. That schedule was created by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. For kindergarten through 12th graders, the non-medical exemption would have to be submitted annually. "We want this to be a process that really requires parents to think each time they are going to claim an exemption about the medical and health consequences for the whole community," said Stephanie Wasserman, executive director of the Colorado Children's Immunization Coalition. Herd immunity has become a more important priority for the state in recent months following a nationwide measles outbreak that revealed Colorado is among the lowest percentage of vaccinated students and the lowest when it comes to kindergartners. "In 2013, only three kids in the state of Colorado were hospitalized due to the administration of a vaccine. On the other hand you had over 500 kids who were admitted to hospitals with a vaccine presentable disease," said Jake Williams, executive director of Healthier Colorado. Wasserman and Williams say there are a few goals here. Making parents think about consequences annually is one. But this also could impact a new state law that requires schools to disclose how many students have opted out in each school. If numbers are updated annually, instead of based on when a parent first sent in an exemption, the numbers may reflect a more accurate count of vaccinated kids. The rule is up for vote by the State Board of Health on April 15. There is currently a public comment period that ends on April 9.
